Auger Overcurrent

What Does this Error Mean?

This error is specific to WiFIRE-enabled (D2) grills, and occurs if the auger motor is damaged or jammed. Almost always, this is caused by wet pellets; however, it can also be caused by foreign, incompatible objects such as charcoal or wood chips.

What is an Auger Jam?

An auger jam is when damaged pellets (or wood chips, charcoal, or foreign objects) get stuck inside the auger shaft, "jamming" or preventing the auger from being able to rotate as needed.

Resolution

If you get this error message, follow these steps to resolve it.

  1. Empty hopper.
  2. If the Auger Jam is caused by wet pellets (most common), clean out all pellets in the grill and discard.
  3. Remove grill grates, drip tray, and heat baffle.
  4. Clean the firepot and the bottom of grill body with a shop vacuum.
  5. Run the Clear Auger function [Menu > Auger > Clear Auger]
    • The Clear Auger Function runs continuously until the user turns it off. Expect this process to take 15 or more minutes.
    • The Clear Auger Function runs the auger forward and backward, attempting to break up what caused the jam and pushing it into the firepot.
    • Be prepared with a way to scoop or vacuum out what the auger pushes into the firepot.
  6. When the auger tube appears to be cleared completely, turn off the Clear Auger function.
  7. Ensure the auger tube is dry.
  8. When dry, refill the hopper with fresh, dry pellets.
  9. Run the Prime Auger function [Menu > Auger > Prime Auger]
  10. Replace all internal components (heat baffles, drip tray, grates).
  11. Ignite the grill as normal.

Clear Auger Does Not Work

If the auger does not turn during the Clear Auger function, or if there is still wet/contaminated pellet material in the auger tube, manually clear the auger jam; see Clearing an Auger Jam in a D2 Grill.

Auger Overcurrent Still Does Not Clear

If Auger Overcurrent appears on the screen after the auger and motor are reinstalled, do the following:

  1. Check the auger motor.
    1. Turn off the grill.
    2. Remove the auger motor by removing the four 8-32 Phillips screws securing it to the grill.
      • Do NOT remove the auger yet.
    3. Turn on the grill.
    4. Run the Prime Auger function.
    5. If the Auger Overcurrent notification is displayed, replace the auger motor.
    6. If the auger motor runs and the Auger Overcurrent notification is not displayed, continue to Check the Auger.
    7. If the auger motor does not run and “Auger Overcurrent” is displayed, even when not attached to the grill, replace the auger motor.
  2. Check the auger (assumes auger motor is already off)
    1. Turn off the grill.
    2. Reach in the hopper and attempt to turn the auger by hand.
    3. If there is resistance to turning the auger, check that the auger bushing screw (same as the ground screw) is not tightened into the auger bushing.
    4. If the auger bushing is damaged or deformed because the screw was driven into the bushing's shoulder, pull the auger and spin the bushing on the auger.
      • If it spins freely, the auger and bushing can be used without issue.
    5. If the auger/ground screw is in the bushing channel, inspect the auger tube and auger for any contamination. Lightly sand with medium-grit sandpaper if this is the case.
    6. Verify that the auger is straight.
      • Pull the auger from the grill, place it on a hard, smooth surface, and roll the auger. If there is significant warping, call Customer Service.

Auger Disconnected Message

If “Auger Disconnected” appears on the screen even after the motor and auger are reinstalled (will typically happen when the Prime Auger function is selected), do the following:

  1. Verify that the 5-lead wiring harness is correctly and securely connected to both the auger motor and the controller.
    • Note that each end of the harness is specific to either the controller or auger motor.
  2. Verify that the green ground wire is securely attached to the auger bushing screw and is making a metal-to-metal connection.
  3. If this does not clear the Auger Disconnected message, contact Customer Service.
